In the early evening of March 30, 2020, tragedy struck in Oxon Hill, Maryland, when 33-year-old Howard Nakia Graham was fatally shot. The male victim was discovered by Prince George's County Police officers at approximately 7:40 p.m. in the 800 block of Southern Avenue, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene. A second individual was also wounded in the incident but sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The investigation into the shooting moved
swiftly, as responding officers noticed a vehicle that matched the description of the suspects' car. A traffic stop was conducted nearby, and two men were taken into custody. Inside their vehicle, police recovered a firearm. The motive for the shooting remained under investigation in the immediate aftermath of the event.
The two individuals apprehended were identified as 24-year-old Deantre Hilliard of Southeast, Washington D.C., and 39-year-old Leonard Toney of Upper Marlboro, Maryland. Both men were subsequently charged with first and second-degree murder, as well as other related charges in connection with the death of Howard Nakia Graham. Following their arrest, they were held in custody at the Department of Corrections.
