In the spring of 2020, a welfare check on a quiet street in Capitol Heights, Maryland, led to the discovery of a fatal shooting. On the afternoon of Saturday, April 4th, officers from the Prince George's County Police Department were dispatched to the 800 block of Kayak Avenue. There, they found 31-year-old Solomon Brown outside, suffering from gunshot wounds. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Brown was reportedly of no fixed address.
The investigation into the death of the male victim quickly progressed. Homicide detectives began to piece together the events that led to the shooting, and their work soon pointed toward a suspect. The preliminary investigation suggested that the fatal encounter stemmed from an argument between Brown and a man he knew. This breakthrough led investigators to 60-year-old Jerald Melton, a resident of the 700 block of Larchmont Avenue in Capitol Heights.
Within two weeks of Solomon Brown's death, an arrest was made in the case. Jerald Melton was taken into custody and charged with the fatal shooting. He faced charges of second-degree murder and other related offenses for his alleged role in the death of Solomon Brown. Following his arrest, Melton was held in the custody of the Department of Corrections.
