On a Saturday afternoon, just four days before Christmas in 2019, the life of 22-year-old Ian Dawley of Suitland, Maryland, was tragically cut short. The young man was found outside on December 21st, in the 5200 block of Marlboro Pike in Capitol Heights, suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite the response of patrol officers to the report of a shooting at approximately 4:10 p.m., Dawley was pronounced dead at the scene.
Homicide detectives from the Prince George's County Police Department immediately began their investigation into the killing. While the motive was not initially clear, authorities stated that they did not believe the shooting was a random act. In the days following the incident, the police department announced a reward of up to $25,000 for any information that would lead to an arrest and indictment in the case, urging the public to come forward with any relevant details.
As a year passed without an arrest, the investigation continued. In December 2020, in a renewed effort to solve the case, detectives released photographs of two individuals identified as persons of interest. Authorities expressed their belief that these individuals might hold information critical to understanding the events that led to Ian Dawley's death. They appealed to the public for assistance in identifying and locating these persons, hoping to bring closure to a case that has remained a painful open wound for the victim's family and community. To date, there have been no publicly announced arrests or charges in the homicide.
