In the summer of 2020, a young man's life was abruptly ended on a street in Baltimore. Michael Montgomery, a 27-year-old male, was fatally shot on the evening of June 11th in the 3700 block of Gelston Avenue. The incident, which occurred at approximately 8:52 p.m., left another chapter in the city's ongoing narrative of violence. Emergency services responded to the scene, but Montgomery succumbed to his injuries there.
For nearly a year, the case remained under investigation by the
Baltimore Police Department's homicide detectives. Then, in May of 2021, a significant development occurred. After a lengthy and detailed investigation, authorities identified a suspect in the killing of Michael Montgomery. Thirty-year-old Martinez Armstrong was taken into custody on May 5th by the Warrant Task Force in the 4700 block of Mt. Hope Drive. He was subsequently charged with first-degree murder, bringing a glimmer of hope for justice to those who mourned Montgomery's loss.
The legal proceedings that followed, however, took an unexpected turn. In January 2023, the case against Martinez Armstrong was dismissed. A Baltimore City Circuit Court judge denied the prosecution's request to postpone the case for a second time in order to locate a crucial witness. Faced with this setback, the prosecution opted to dismiss the charges against Armstrong, leaving the tragic death of Michael Montgomery without a legal resolution.
