On the evening of September 21, 2020, events unfolded at the Master Suites Hotel in Waldorf, Maryland, that would end the life of 29-year-old Kenneth Dionel Brawner. At approximately 6:18 p.m., patrol officers were dispatched to the hotel on Old Washington Road following a report of a shooting. Inside one of the rooms, they discovered Brawner suffering from a gunshot wound.
He was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries a short time later.
The initial investigation by the Charles County Sheriff's Office suggested that the incident was not a random act of violence. Detectives believed that suspects had specifically entered Brawner's hotel room and shot him. The motive behind the tragic event was later determined to be a robbery attempt. Investigators learned that a conspiracy had been formed to rob the occupants of Brawner's room.
In the weeks that followed, the investigation led to the identification and arrest of three suspects. Marc Carlyle McLaughlin, Jr., 31, of Brandywine, Terrence Wills, 27, of Waldorf, and Cameron Marcell Fletcher, 39, of District Heights, were all taken into custody. They were subsequently charged with first-degree murder and other related offenses for their alleged involvement in the death of Kenneth Brawner.
The legal process moved forward, and on May 11, 2022, a Charles County jury found Marc Carlyle McLaughlin, Jr. guilty of first-degree felony murder, attempted armed robbery, and other related charges. The trial revealed that McLaughlin had entered Brawner's room, brandished a firearm, and demanded money before shooting him. On August 15, 2022, a judge sentenced McLaughlin to life in prison plus an additional 30 years. During the sentencing, the judge remarked on the egregious violation of Brawner's right to feel safe in his own temporary residence.
