In the morning hours of an early autumn day in Baltimore, Marcus Xavier Parks Sr., a 51-year-old man, was at the helm of his MTA bus, a job he had held for two decades. On October 8, 2020, his familiar route took a tragic and unforeseen turn. An argument erupted when a man attempted to board the bus at a time when passengers were not being allowed on. The situation escalated quickly when the man, accompanied by a woman, snatched Mr. Parks' bag.
Instinctively, Mr. Parks gave chase.
It was during this pursuit, in the 1200 block of East Fayette Street, that the male suspect turned and fired a gun, striking the veteran bus driver. A witness to the harrowing event later recounted seeing the shooter standing over Mr. Parks as he pulled the trigger. Emergency services arrived at the scene, but Mr. Parks was pronounced dead from the gunshot wounds.
The investigation into the death of Marcus Parks moved swiftly. Within a day, authorities had apprehended two individuals in connection with the fatal shooting. Cameron Silcott, then 24, and Nichelle Greene, 27, were taken into custody. They were subsequently charged with first- and second-degree murder, assault, and weapons violations. The arrests took place less than a mile from where the deadly encounter had occurred.
In May of 2022, Cameron Silcott appeared in court and pleaded guilty to first-degree murder for his role in the death of Marcus Parks Sr. As a result of his plea, he was expected to receive a sentence of life in prison plus an additional 20 years. Nichelle Greene was also charged in the incident that led to the death of the longtime MTA employee.
