In the winter of 2011, the life of 20-year-old Laquan Crawford was cut short in Louisville, Kentucky. On January 16, he was fatally shot near the intersection of 39th Street and Miami Avenue. The male victim's death left his family grieving and searching for answers. Family members quickly began to suspect that Crawford's death was not a random act of violence. They believed he may have been lured to the neighborhood where the shooting occurred. This suspicion was connected to an upcoming court case Crawford was facing related to drug charges from 2008. There was speculation that his death was meant to silence him and prevent him from potentially cooperating with authorities. This theory arose from a belief among his family that those involved in his death were known to him and were concerned about what he might say in court.

However, in December 2012, a grand jury brought indictments against three men in connection with Crawford's murder: Mitchell Jackson, Cordell Richardson, and Dennis Minor. The search for the remaining suspects continued into the new year. In January 2013, the U.S. Marshals Service located and arrested Mitchell Jackson in Shively, Kentucky. At the time of his arrest, he was found with significant quantities of marijuana and cocaine. Reports from that period also indicated that Cordell Richardson had been recently indicted and taken into custody, marking the final arrest in the case and concluding the nearly two-year-long investigation into the death of Laquan Crawford.
