In the late hours of September 17, 2022, Rickey Jones Jr., a 42-year-old Black male from Louisville, Kentucky, was driving on the I-264 East. As his vehicle traveled between the Cane Run Road and Dixie Highway exits, he was struck by a gunshot. He was quickly transported to the University of Louisville Hospital, but the severity of the wound proved fatal, and he was pronounced dead.
Known affectionately as 'Tickles' by his grandmother, Rickey was born in Louisville on October 25, 1979.
He was a skilled mason, having earned a certification in Hardline Concrete & Masonry, and was known for his warm personality. He found joy in outdoor activities like fishing and grilling and cherished the time he spent with his daughter and granddaughter. His death left a profound void in the lives of his family and friends.
The Louisville Metro Police Department and Shively Police Department launched an extensive investigation into the shooting. The case was treated as a homicide, and detectives began to pursue all possible leads to identify those responsible for Rickey Jones Jr.'s death. In the course of their investigation, several individuals were identified as suspects.
Ultimately, the investigation led to the arrest of Daquan Lampkins. After a thorough judicial process, which included the presentation of substantial evidence and witness testimonies, Lampkins was found guilty on multiple charges, including the murder of Rickey Jones Jr. He was also convicted of violating a protective order. The court sentenced Lampkins to two life sentences without the possibility of parole, bringing a measure of closure to a case that had deeply affected the community.
