In the early evening of September 17, 2020, a burst of gunfire shattered the dinnertime peace on Decatur Street in the Charlestown neighborhood of Boston. When police responded to reports of shots fired and a car crash around 7:30 p.m., they discovered two men inside a vehicle, both suffering from serious gunshot wounds. One of the men, 24-year-old Wildeny Tejeda-Mejia of Lynn, was pronounced dead at the scene.
The second victim, 28-year-old David Martinez of Roxbury, was rushed to a
nearby hospital with life-threatening injuries. He succumbed to his wounds several days later. The incident, which marked the first homicide of the year in Charlestown, was described by the Boston Police Commissioner as a targeted attack, not a random act of violence. Authorities believed the victims were specifically sought out by their assailant or assailants.
In the wake of the deadly shooting, law enforcement officials appealed to the public for assistance, urging anyone with information to come forward and contact homicide detectives.
