In the quiet neighborhood of Dundalk, Maryland, a young life was abruptly cut short in a burst of violence. DeShawnte Young, a 21-year-old male, was fatally shot on the evening of Tuesday, February 23, 2021. The incident unfolded in the 2900 block of Yorkway, where police responded to a report of a shooting shortly before 8 p.m.
Upon their arrival, officers discovered Young suffering from gunshot wounds to his upper body.
He was rushed to Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The initial investigation revealed that the perpetrator had fled the scene before law enforcement arrived, leaving behind a community in shock and a family to grapple with a sudden and tragic loss.
In the days that followed, detectives from the Baltimore County Police Department's Homicide Unit worked diligently to piece together the events that led to Young's death. Their investigation led them to a suspect, and on March 1, 2021, an arrest was made. Twenty-four-year-old Deonte Moffett was taken into custody and subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with the shooting death of DeShawnte Young.
