In the city of Baltimore, on March 5, 2021, the life of 32-year-old Tavon Antonio Hutton was tragically cut short. Hutton was on the 400 block of West Saratoga Street when he was fatally shot. First responders found him lying on the sidewalk, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Hutton was in a wheelchair at the time of the attack.
The investigation into the shooting led police to identify Donte A. Brown as the suspect.
Video surveillance footage captured the incident, showing Brown shooting Hutton five times. During the trial, the prosecution described the act as an 'execution'. Brown's defense attorney argued that the identity of the shooter, who was wearing a mask in the video, could not be confirmed.
Despite the defense's arguments, Donte A. Brown, then 41, was found guilty of first-degree murder and several firearm-related charges on January 31, 2023. On June 13, 2023, he was sentenced to life in prison, plus an additional 35 years. The first ten years of the additional sentence are to be served without the possibility of parole. During the sentencing, members of Hutton's family delivered emotional statements, expressing their profound grief and calling for justice. One of Hutton's aunts called Brown a 'coward,' and his mother simply stated, 'I hurt, I hurt, I hurt'.
