In the early evening of April 3, 2021, a burst of gunfire shattered the peace in the 700 block of Newtowne Drive in Annapolis, Maryland, marking the city's first homicide of the year. When Annapolis Police officers arrived at the scene around 7:30 p.m., they found 25-year-old Marc Terrell Hill Jr., a Black male from Glen Burnie, lying in the breezeway of an apartment complex with gunshot wounds.
Paramedics rushed him to the R Adams Cowley Shock Trauma Center in Baltimore, but his injuries proved to be fatal, and he died shortly after arrival.
The investigation into Hill's death quickly became a collaborative effort between the Annapolis and Anne Arundel County Police Departments. Their joint efforts led them to a suspect, 19-year-old Israel Wyaheim Thompson of Glen Burnie. On May 18, 2021, Thompson was taken into custody and faced a litany of charges, including first- and second-degree murder. The motive behind the deadly shooting has not been publicly disclosed by the authorities.
On April 28, 2022, Israel Wyaheim Thompson appeared in Anne Arundel Circuit Court and pleaded guilty to second-degree murder and the use of a firearm in the commission of a felony. A sentencing hearing was held on June 10, 2022. For the second-degree murder charge, Thompson was sentenced to 40 years in prison with all but 22 years suspended. For the firearm charge, he received a 20-year sentence with all but 10 years suspended. It remains unclear if the sentences will be served concurrently or consecutively. Upon his release, Thompson will be subject to five years of supervised probation.
