In the early morning hours of December 4, 2019, the sounds of gunfire shattered the pre-dawn stillness in the 600 block of Skipjack Court in Annapolis, Maryland. When the violence subsided, 18-year-old Sandy Dukes Santiago Campos, a male, lay dead, the victim of a fatal shooting. Another teenager, a 15-year-old boy, was also struck by the gunfire, sustaining a leg injury.
Emergency services were first alerted to the scene by a call about a male who had been shot in the leg.
As police were en route, dispatchers received further reports of gunshots in the same vicinity. Upon their arrival, officers discovered the injured 15-year-old outside. A short distance away, outside a residence, they found Sandy Dukes Santiago Campos, who had already succumbed to his wounds and was pronounced dead at the scene. The injured teen was transported to a local hospital for treatment of his non-life-threatening injuries.
In the immediate aftermath of the shooting, Annapolis Police began their investigation into the double shooting. However, law enforcement officials did not immediately release any information regarding a possible motive for the attack. Despite their inquiries and appeals to the public for information, no suspects were publicly identified in the initial stages of the investigation.
As of early 2020, there had been no arrests announced in connection with the murder of Sandy Dukes Santiago Campos. The case left a community searching for answers and a family grappling with the sudden and violent loss of a young life. The investigation into the circumstances surrounding the shooting and the identification of those responsible remained ongoing.
