On a summer morning in Baltimore, tragedy struck when Donta Lavon Sampson, a 45-year-old male, was fatally shot. The incident occurred on July 18, 2021, around 10:31 a.m. in the 800 block of West Lexington Street. When police arrived at the scene, they discovered Sampson suffering from gunshot wounds. He was quickly transported to the University of Maryland Shock Trauma Center, but his injuries proved to be too severe, and he was pronounced dead by medical personnel shortly after his
arrival.
For nearly a year, the investigation into Sampson's death continued, until a significant breakthrough was made. In June 2022, authorities arrested 22-year-old Keonteze Montgomery in connection with the fatal shooting. The arrest took place in the 500 block of North Curley Street. Montgomery was subsequently charged with first-degree murder for his alleged role in Sampson's death and was taken to the Central Booking Intake Facility.
Following his arrest, the legal proceedings against Keonteze Montgomery began to unfold. In October 2022, prosecutors presented Montgomery with a plea deal which would have resulted in a sentence of life in prison with all but 65 years suspended, followed by five years of supervised probation for the charges of first-degree murder and use of a firearm during a felony violent crime. Montgomery, alongside his defense attorney, chose to reject this offer. Consequently, a trial was scheduled for March 2023 to determine his guilt or innocence in the shooting death of Donta Sampson.
