On the morning of May 6, 2023, the sound of gunfire echoed through the 2100 block of Hollins Street in Southwest Baltimore. Patrolling officers in the vicinity of Hollins and Smallwood Streets heard the shots at approximately 9:52 a.m. and responded to the scene. There, they discovered 40-year-old Nathaniel Mack, a Black male, suffering from multiple gunshot wounds.
Medical personnel were called to the location, but Mack's injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced deceased at the scene.
Homicide detectives from the Baltimore Police Department immediately took control of the investigation. Their efforts led them to identify a suspect in the fatal shooting. On June 21, 2023, warrant apprehension detectives arrested 39-year-old Steven Gibson in the 400 block of Walcott Road without incident. Following his arrest, Gibson was transported to the Central Booking Intake Facility.
Steven Gibson was subsequently charged with first-degree murder for the death of Nathaniel Mack. In July 2024, the case against Gibson went to trial before a Baltimore City Circuit Court jury. During the proceedings, the prosecution presented evidence that included video footage from the area of the murder and cell phone data that placed Gibson in the vicinity at the time of the shooting. On July 15, 2024, the jury found Steven Gibson guilty of first-degree murder, firearm use in a felony or violent crime, and having a handgun on his person.
