On the morning of August 2, 2024, Raleigh police responded to a shooting incident on Briarmont Court, near Sunnybrook Road. Upon arrival, officers discovered two individuals with gunshot wounds: 51-year-old Sherice D'Angelo McClain and his wife, Yalanda Moore-McClain. Both were transported to a nearby hospital, where Sherice succumbed to his injuries. Yalanda, a former full-time Wake County Sheriff's deputy and current reserve deputy, sustained serious injuries but survived.
The suspect, 46-year-old Julius Maurice Wilcox, was arrested at the scene. He was charged with first-degree murder for the death of Sherice McClain and assault with a dangerous weapon with intent to kill, inflicting serious injury, for the attack on Yalanda Moore-McClain. Wilcox resided in the townhouse owned by Healing Interventions Inc., a mental health services organization founded and led by Yalanda Moore-McClain since 2009.
During Wilcox's initial court appearance, his attorney indicated that he would be represented by a capital defender due to the severity of the charges, which could potentially result in the death penalty if convicted. The court documents revealed that a 9mm handgun was used in the offenses. Wilcox is currently held at the Wake County Detention Center without bond, with his next court appearance scheduled for August 26, 2024.
The investigation revealed that all parties involved were acquainted, though authorities have not publicly disclosed a specific motive for the shooting. The incident has raised concerns within the community, especially given its proximity to a nearby Montessori school, which implemented a lockdown to ensure student safety during the police response.
Sherice D'Angelo "Reece" McClain was born on June 10, 1972, in York County. He was known affectionately as "Reece" or "Juice" and had a strong connection to his community. His life was celebrated on August 22, 2024, at Liberty Church in York, South Carolina, followed by burial at Gold Hill Baptist Church Cemetery.
