John Edward Rowe, a 73-year-old man from Raleigh, North Carolina, tragically lost his life on January 21, 2025. Rowe, who had recently retired after a long and distinguished career in family medicine, was known for his deep involvement in music, political activism, and his devotion to his family. Originally from Wells River, Vermont, he had spent decades working as a physician and mentor before relocating to Durham to be closer to his children and grandchildren.
On the evening of January
21, 2025, Raleigh police responded to a distress call regarding a burglary at a residence on Democracy Street. The caller, a woman, reported that the suspect was a man she had known from a previous relationship. Upon arrival, officers encountered 70-year-old Antonio Rodrigues, who immediately opened fire. In the ensuing exchange of gunfire, Rodrigues was fatally shot by police, while Rowe sustained critical injuries. He was transported to a hospital but succumbed to his wounds later that night.
The incident also left a Raleigh police officer seriously injured. Authorities have not disclosed the officer’s identity at the request of his family. Following the shooting, law enforcement conducted an extensive investigation, including a search of Rodrigues’ vehicle, which led to the involvement of the hazardous devices unit and the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives. Although some items were initially deemed suspicious, they were ultimately determined to pose no threat.
Rowe’s death has left his family and community in mourning. He is survived by his children, grandchildren, and a large extended family. A memorial service was scheduled to take place on February 8, 2025, at the United Church of Chapel Hill. In honor of his lifelong commitment to social causes, his family encouraged donations to organizations such as Everytown for Gun Safety and local NPR stations.
