On an autumn afternoon in Baltimore, a sequence of events unfolded that would tragically end the life of 33-year-old Whitney Purnell. On October 4, 2021, a heated argument escalated into a physical altercation inside a store on North Eutaw Street. The woman with whom she was arguing, Jasmine Jones, then 24 years old, was seen on video surveillance punching Purnell in the head. The force of the blow caused Purnell to fall and strike her head on an ATM.
The confrontation did not end there.
Jones then reportedly dragged Purnell by her hair. During this struggle, a handgun that Purnell was carrying discharged, inflicting a single gunshot wound to her torso. Emergency services were called to the scene, and Purnell was rushed to a nearby hospital in critical condition. For ten days, she fought for her life, but ultimately succumbed to her injuries on October 14, 2021.
Following the incident, Jasmine Jones fled the scene but later turned herself into the Baltimore Police Department's homicide unit for questioning. She admitted to striking Purnell but claimed that it was Purnell's own gun that accidentally discharged during their struggle. Initially, Jones was charged with assault, but after Purnell's death, the charges were upgraded to involuntary manslaughter and first-degree assault.
In April 2023, Jones, then 26, appeared in court. Instead of proceeding to a jury trial for manslaughter, she accepted a plea agreement. Jones pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of second-degree assault. A judge sentenced her to ten years in prison, with all but four years suspended, to be followed by three years of supervised probation.
