In the early hours of July 2, 2023, a festive block party in the Brooklyn Homes community of South Baltimore turned into a scene of chaos and tragedy. Amidst the sounds of celebration, gunfire erupted in the 800 block of Gretna Court, forever altering the lives of dozens of people. When the violence subsided, 18-year-old Aaliyah Gonzalez, a recent high school graduate with a bright future, was found deceased at the scene.
Another young person, 20-year-old Kylis Fagbemi, also lost his life in the mass shooting that injured 28 others, many of whom were teenagers.
Aaliyah, an honor student who had just graduated from Glen Burnie High School, had aspirations of working in the medical field. Described by her family as a beautiful person with a pure heart, she was not one for large crowds but had attended the party to support a friend after a last-minute invitation. Her death left her family devastated, grappling with the senseless loss of a young woman on the cusp of adulthood. In the wake of the shooting, her loved ones remembered her as a quiet and academically proud student who was eagerly looking forward to her future.
The investigation into the mass shooting has been complex, with authorities believing there were multiple shooters who fired indiscriminately into the crowd. While several arrests have been made in connection with the incident, no one has been charged specifically with the murders of Aaliyah Gonzalez and Kylis Fagbemi. Among those taken into custody was a 17-year-old and an 18-year-old, Tristan Jackson, who faced numerous charges including conspiracy to commit murder and attempted murder.
In the years following the tragic event, some of the individuals arrested have pleaded guilty to various charges. Tristan Jackson was sentenced to ten years in prison for his role in the shooting. Three minors also pleaded guilty and were sentenced to 25 years in prison with 20 years suspended, followed by five years of probation. Another 18-year-old, Aaron Brown, also pleaded guilty. Despite these legal proceedings, the direct perpetrators of Aaliyah and Kylis's deaths remain uncharged, and the investigation is ongoing. In her memory, Aaliyah's family has organized annual 'Aaliyah Day' celebrations to honor her life and advocate for an end to gun violence.
