On a Christmas Eve that should have been filled with holiday cheer, professional boxer Danny Kelly Jr., a 30-year-old male, was tragically shot and killed in a road rage incident in Temple Hills, Maryland. He was driving his family to a holiday dinner when the fatal encounter occurred on December 24, 2021, at approximately 4:40 p.m. on St. Barnabas Road. In the vehicle with Kelly were his girlfriend and their three young children, who witnessed the horrific event but were fortunately unharmed.
The incident unfolded when another vehicle pulled up alongside Kelly's SUV, and an occupant opened fire, striking Kelly. He was found unresponsive in the driver's seat with gunshot wounds and was pronounced dead a short time later at a hospital.
The senseless act of violence, stemming from a dispute on the road, left a family devastated and a community in mourning on what should have been a joyous occasion.
In the wake of the shooting, the Prince George's County Police Department launched an intensive investigation. Their efforts led to the identification of a suspect, 25-year-old Markell Lewis of Clinton. A significant breakthrough in the case came when Lewis was arrested just days after the murder on an unrelated charge of being a felon in possession of a firearm. Ballistic testing linked the gun recovered during that arrest to the murder of Danny Kelly Jr.
Following the ballistic match, Lewis was arrested and charged with first-degree murder, second-degree murder, and multiple counts of attempted murder. Police stated that Lewis confessed to the shooting, citing road rage as the motive for his actions. In July 2023, Markell Lewis was sentenced to 80 years in prison for the murder of Danny Kelly Jr., bringing a measure of justice to the grieving family.
