On a cold January night in 2011, a young Black/African American man named Michael DeAngelo Layne, aged 19, was walking with friends in his Temple Hills, Maryland neighborhood. Their evening of playing video games took a tragic turn when they were confronted in what police described as an attempted armed robbery on Norcross Street on January 4th. During the encounter, a bullet grazed Michael's chest, a seemingly non-fatal wound that tragically induced a fatal heart attack, ending the teenager's life at the scene.
The sudden violence of that night also left three of Michael's companions injured. One, a 21-year-old, was critically wounded, while two others, aged 18 and 21, sustained non-life-threatening injuries and were transported to a local hospital for treatment.
In the immediate aftermath, the Prince George's County Police Department launched an investigation into the shooting, searching for the suspect or suspects responsible for the deadly assault and the motive behind the attack.
In the weeks and months that followed, Michael's mother recalled her son as a sharp dresser who was beginning to make positive decisions about his future, making his sudden loss all the more painful for his family.
