In the early morning hours of January 24, 2022, Cheryl Marie McCormack, a 51-year-old White/Caucasian woman, was working a late-night shift for DoorDash in northeast Baltimore to earn extra money. The mother of three and grandmother was accompanied by a friend when her car ran out of gas in the 3900 block of White Avenue. This unfortunate event would soon turn tragic in a city grappling with a rising tide of violence.

As her friend set off on foot to find a gas station, he was accosted by two individuals who attempted to rob him. The assailants then forced the friend to lead them back to the disabled vehicle where McCormack was waiting. The two suspects demanded McCormack’s purse and wallet, but she refused to surrender her belongings. In a senseless act of violence that followed her refusal, one of the suspects shot her. McCormack died at the scene from her injuries.

The investigation into the murder of the beloved mother and trained paralegal moved forward with police reviewing surveillance footage from the area. Investigators released video to the public in an effort to identify the two suspects involved in the botched robbery and fatal shooting. Their efforts proved fruitful when, nearly a month after the incident, a 16-year-old boy turned himself in to the authorities.

The teenage suspect was subsequently charged with first-degree murder in connection with McCormack's death. He is being held without bond, and his name has not been publicly released due to his age. While one arrest has been made, the second individual involved in the tragic death of Cheryl McCormack was still being sought by police.
