On the evening of February 10, 2022, a 19-year-old male named Keon Jones was walking to his residence in Germantown, Maryland. At approximately 9:06 p.m., near the intersection of Cinnamon Drive and Mustard Seed Court, a vehicle approached him. An individual inside the car opened fire, striking Jones with at least one gunshot. The vehicle then fled the scene, leaving him critically wounded.
First responders arrived to find Jones suffering from an apparent gunshot wound and immediately
began life-saving measures. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital in critical condition. Despite the efforts of medical personnel, Keon Jones succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead the following day, on February 11, 2022. The case was ruled a homicide, prompting an extensive investigation by the Montgomery County Police Department's Major Crimes Division.
Through their investigation, detectives identified Kyler Mcroy, a 19-year-old from the neighboring city of Gaithersburg, as a suspect in the fatal drive-by shooting. On October 27, 2022, the Montgomery County State's Attorney's Office indicted Mcroy on the charge of first-degree murder. Further investigation linked Mcroy to other shooting incidents in the area.
On June 11, 2024, Kyler Mcroy pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit first-degree murder in the death of Keon Jones. He also pleaded guilty to charges related to a separate shooting. On May 9, 2025, a judge sentenced Mcroy to life in prison, suspending all but 30 years of the sentence. Upon his release, he will be subject to five years of supervised probation. The judge also recommended Mcroy for the Patuxent Youthful Offender program during his incarceration.
