In the spring of 2022, on the night of April 22nd, the life of 20-year-old Taon Lamont Cline was tragically cut short in Germantown, Maryland. Known to some as 'Tay Tay,' the young man from Frederick was found with multiple gunshot wounds in the 19500 block of Gunners Branch Road. Despite the efforts of first responders who arrived at the scene around 10:50 p.m., Cline was pronounced dead.
The investigation into the homicide quickly pointed to a group of teenagers.
In the weeks that followed, four arrests were made in connection with the fatal shooting. The suspects were identified as 15-year-old Malik Hney, 14-year-old Justin Acosta, 16-year-old Malachi Hney, and 17-year-old Daylon Windell Miller. Authorities stated that the shooting was not a random act of violence, but rather stemmed from an ongoing conflict between rival gangs in the Germantown and Gaithersburg areas. All four teenagers were charged as adults with first-degree murder.
Justice for Taon Lamont Cline saw a significant development in February 2024 when two of the accused, brothers Malik and Malachi Hney, were sentenced for their roles in the murder. After being convicted by a jury of conspiracy to commit first-degree murder, a judge sentenced both to life in prison, with all but 30 years suspended. Upon their eventual release, they will be subject to five years of supervised probation. The legal proceedings for the other two individuals charged in connection with Cline's death have also been moving through the court system.
