Cesar Segovia, a 16-year-old male, was killed in a shooting incident on Wednesday, May 11, 2022, in Germantown, Maryland. His death was part of a violent encounter that also led to the death of 21-year-old Jeffrey Baffour Akowuah.
The events of that afternoon unfolded around 4:10 p.m. in the 19600 block of Crystal Rock Drive, where Segovia, a resident of Gaithersburg, and Akowuah, from Germantown, had arranged to meet for reasons that have not been made public.
An altercation erupted between the two, culminating in a mutual exchange of gunfire.
Law enforcement became aware of the situation at approximately 4:20 p.m. when they were dispatched to Holy Cross Germantown Hospital in response to a report of a gunshot victim. Upon arrival, they discovered that Cesar Segovia had been brought to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead from his wounds. Shortly thereafter, at 4:40 p.m., a second report of a shooting directed officers to the 19700 block of Crystal Rock Drive. There, they found Jeffrey Akowuah suffering from a gunshot wound. Despite the immediate life-saving efforts of emergency medical personnel, Akowuah died at the scene.
The Montgomery County Police Department's Major Crimes Division launched a homicide investigation into the deaths. Detectives concluded that the two individuals shot each other during their confrontation. While the specific motive for the meeting and subsequent violence remains under investigation, there was some speculation that the incident could have been gang-related. No other suspects were identified, and no arrests have been announced in the case, which is being treated as a double homicide.
