In the pre-dawn hours of June 13, 2022, a tragic and violent encounter unfolded in a Dunkirk, Maryland residence, culminating in the death of 20-year-old Tyree Tashawn Richardson. A male resident of Glenn Dale, Richardson had gone to the home on Lakeside Court with the intention of reconciling with his ex-girlfriend, with whom he shared a child. Unbeknownst to him, another man, Terrance Kenneth Yancey, then 22, was inside the bedroom with the young woman.
As Richardson entered the bedroom shortly after 3:30 a.m., he was met with a sudden hail of gunfire. Yancey, who had been lying in wait, fired multiple rounds, striking Richardson repeatedly. The ex-girlfriend, awakened by the gunshots, witnessed the horrific event and saw Richardson collapse to the floor. Yancey immediately fled the scene on foot, prompting a 911 call from the residence reporting that someone had been shot in the neck by an unknown suspect. When deputies from the Calvert County Sheriff's Office arrived, they found Richardson suffering from fatal gunshot wounds and pronounced him deceased at the scene.
A massive manhunt for Yancey ensued, involving multiple law enforcement agencies, including the Anne Arundel and Prince George's County Police Departments, and a K-9 unit. The search concluded nearly 24 hours later when Yancey was apprehended in a wooded area near Town Center Boulevard in Dunkirk in the early morning of June 14, 2022. He was subsequently charged with second-degree murder, first-degree assault, and other related offenses.
During the ensuing legal proceedings, evidence revealed that Yancey fired 16 shots at Richardson. In April 2023, following a week-long trial where the prosecution presented over 300 pieces of physical evidence, a Calvert County jury convicted Terrance Kenneth Yancey of voluntary manslaughter, two firearms violations, four counts of reckless endangerment, and one count of destruction of evidence. He was, however, acquitted of the initial murder charge. On July 28, 2023, a Calvert County Circuit Court Judge sentenced Yancey, then 23, to 18 years of active incarceration for his role in the shooting death of Tyree Richardson. Due to the violent nature of the crime, he will be required to serve at least half of his sentence before becoming eligible for parole.
