On a warm August evening, 8-year-old Peyton 'PJ' Evans was inside a Landover, Maryland apartment, enjoying Taco Tuesday and playing video games with his cousin. The young boy, known for his gentle soul and dreams of a future in the NFL, had just come from a victorious football scrimmage and was unwinding with family. Outside the apartment on Brightseat Road, a white sedan pulled into the parking lot, and gunfire suddenly erupted.
A stray bullet pierced through the glass patio door, striking PJ as he sat at the living room table. He was rushed to a local hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries on August 24, 2021. Authorities later confirmed that PJ was not the intended target of the shooting.
The investigation into the senseless killing of the rising third-grader quickly moved forward, aided by tips from the community. Less than a month after PJ's death, Prince George's County Police announced the arrests of three suspects. Brothers Desmond Nkwocha, 21, and Mark Nkwocha, 23, both from Lanham, along with 23-year-old George Shamman of East Riverdale, were taken into custody. Investigators believe the shooting stemmed from an ongoing dispute between one of the men and an individual who lived in the apartment where PJ was killed.
Following their arrests, a grand jury indicted all three men. Desmond Nkwocha and George Shamman each faced 19 counts, while Mark Nkwocha was indicted on 18 counts. The charges for all three suspects included murder, attempted murder, and conspiracy. The case highlighted the tragic consequences of gun violence, taking the life of a child remembered for his love of football, his bright smile, and the close bond he shared with his mother.
