On the night of June 22, 2022, 39-year-old Javier Gonzalez-Mena was in his room at the Red Roof Inn on Shady Grove Road in Rockville, Maryland. At approximately 11:30 p.m., a knock came at the door. When Gonzalez-Mena stepped outside, he was met by two men, Sergey Danshin and Micah Clemons. Following a brief confrontation, Danshin left the immediate area, only to return minutes later with his face covered.
He then ambushed and fatally shot Gonzalez-Mena.
Present at the scene was Gonzalez-Mena's girlfriend, who was holding his hand as he was shot and fell to the ground. After the shooting, Danshin removed his facial covering, revealing his identity to the girlfriend, who recognized him. Danshin then forced her into a waiting getaway car. As soon as she was able, she contacted 911 to report the crime. The swift call to emergency services led to the arrest of Danshin, then 34, Clemons, then 32, and the getaway driver, Willman Quintanilla.
The three men faced legal consequences for their roles in the death of Javier Gonzalez-Mena. On January 13, 2023, a jury convicted Sergey Danshin of first-degree murder and related handgun charges. He was subsequently sentenced to life in prison plus an additional 20 years. Micah Clemons pleaded guilty to first-degree assault and firearm charges and received a sentence of 15 years, with all but five years suspended, to be followed by five years of supervised probation. The getaway driver, Willman Quintanilla, pleaded guilty to being an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder. He was sentenced to 10 years, with all but four years suspended, and will also have five years of supervised probation upon release.
