In the late summer of 2022, a young man named Julian Fruh, who was 19 years old, was just beginning to map out his future. Having recently graduated from high school, he had secured his very first job as a security officer with Allied Universal. The position was an assignment to the Marble Hall Garden Apartments, a complex near Morgan State University in Baltimore where many students resided.
He was also making plans to enroll in college, embarking on a new chapter of his life.
On the evening of August 31, 2022, while at work, Fruh was in a parking lot of the apartment complex. He may have been on a break when a figure approached him. In a sudden act of violence, Fruh was shot in the head. His co-worker placed a frantic call to 911, and Fruh was rushed to a nearby hospital, but his injuries were too severe, and he was pronounced dead. The event sent shockwaves through the community, prompting Morgan State University to increase the presence of law enforcement in the area to ensure the safety of its students.
The investigation into the shooting began immediately. Detectives discovered that just before the fatal encounter, Fruh had been on his phone. An examination of his phone records and text messages became a critical part of the case. They found that Fruh was communicating with an individual right up until the moment of the shooting. Surveillance footage from the area showed Fruh in the parking lot on his phone when another male, wearing a light blue hooded sweatshirt, approached him, and shots were fired. Authorities also noted that Fruh had marijuana and a scale on him at the time of his death, with charging documents suggesting he had purchased marijuana from a student.
The digital trail led investigators to Chase Marco Wilson, a 21-year-old sophomore and business administration student at Morgan State University. A witness provided police with access to Fruh's phone, which contained text messages with Wilson. Phone records confirmed the two were in contact just before the killing. On September 27, 2022, police arrested Wilson in downtown Baltimore. A search of his apartment uncovered clothing that matched what the shooter was seen wearing on surveillance video. Wilson was subsequently charged with first-degree murder. Nearly a year later, in July 2023, a jury found Chase Wilson guilty of second-degree murder for the death of Julian Fruh. He faced a potential sentence of up to 60 years in prison.
