In the closing days of 2022, a tragedy unfolded in a West Baltimore home that cut short the life of a young boy. On December 30th, 8-year-old Dylan James King, a Black male, was fatally shot inside a residence on the 2100 block of Presbury Street. Police and paramedics arrived at the scene around 6 p.m. to find a neighbor attempting to render aid to the young victim, who was suffering from massive trauma to his head, neck, and chest.
Dylan was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries. The cause of his death was later determined to be multiple gunshot wounds to his back, head, and shoulders.
Inside the house, officers discovered Dylan's 18-year-old brother, Devin Wilson, in a state of distress in a second-floor bedroom, holding a shotgun to his own head. Law enforcement was able to de-escalate the situation and persuade Wilson to put down the weapon. He was then taken into custody and transported to a hospital for a psychiatric evaluation. The investigation that followed revealed a heart-wrenching family drama. Wilson had initially given conflicting accounts of the incident, at one point telling his father that Dylan had shot himself. However, he later admitted to the shooting, claiming it was an accident.
The investigation led to Devin Wilson being charged with first and second-degree murder, as well as assault, in connection with his younger brother's death. It was revealed that Wilson had been tasked with watching his younger siblings at the time of the shooting, though no one else was home when the fatal shots were fired. He had reportedly purchased the shotgun from an unknown individual. In August of 2023, the legal proceedings came to a conclusion when Devin Wilson pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of manslaughter. He was subsequently sentenced to ten years in prison, with all but six years of the sentence suspended. The tragic death of young Dylan King left his family and the Baltimore community grappling with the devastating consequences of gun violence.
