Summary based on 11 sources
In the late hours of October 30, 2023, the life of 16-year-old Khaleel Jones, a male student at REACH! Partnership School, was tragically cut short in Northeast Baltimore. Initially, police responded to what appeared to be a single-vehicle crash in the 2500 block of East Orleans Street around 11:30 p.m. First responders found Jones unresponsive in the street, and it was soon discovered that he had not been killed in the crash, but had sustained a gunshot wound. He was transported to a local hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Investigators determined that Jones had been shot in the 4600 block of Bowleys Lane, about three miles from where the car crashed. According to police reports, the shooting occurred during a robbery. Jones was in a vehicle with two other teenagers, an 18-year-old and a 15-year-old, who were reportedly trying to drive him to the hospital when they crashed the car, which had been reported stolen two days prior. Homicide detectives interviewed the two other teenagers, but it is unclear if any charges were filed against them.

The investigation into the death of Khaleel Jones was further complicated by his past involvement with law enforcement. Just months before his death, Jones had been arrested and shot during an attempted carjacking of an off-duty Baltimore police officer. As of late 2023, Baltimore Police homicide detectives were still actively investigating his murder. No suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been announced in connection with the shooting. Authorities have urged anyone with information to come forward and contact the police or Metro Crime Stoppers.
