Death by Force

Guard J. T. McAteer, aged 50, tragically lost his life on July 5, 1977, while serving at the Lancaster County Prison Camp in South Carolina. McAteer was shot and killed with his own service weapon during an escape attempt by an inmate. The incident occurred when McAteer allowed two prisoners into the guard shack to use the telephone. One of the inmates seized the opportunity to grab McAteer's .22 caliber pistol and shot him in the chest three times, resulting in his immediate death.
