On the night of January 5, 1980, 18-year-old David Krulewicz and his 15-year-old girlfriend parked his van on Old Salem Road, a secluded area in northern Beaufort County, South Carolina. At approximately 11:45 p.m., a man approached the vehicle and fired three shots through the passenger-side window, fatally wounding David.
