In the late evening of Wednesday, August 14, 2024, the life of 33-year-old Marquise Tyrell Green, a Black male, was cut short by gunfire at the Cross Creek Apartments in Beaufort, South Carolina. Authorities believe a verbal altercation that began at another location escalated, culminating in the fatal shooting. Around 9:50 p.m., Beaufort Police Department officers responded to reports of shots fired at the apartment complex.
Upon arrival, they discovered Green suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. Despite immediate medical aid rendered by officers, the fire department, and EMS, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
The investigation into the homicide led to the swift apprehension of four individuals. Two days after the shooting, on August 15, police arrested 26-year-old Stardaisha Richardson and 31-year-old Emily Cole. The following day, August 16, authorities took 24-year-old Jafari Hakeem Brown and Juquetta Jenkins into custody. Brown was identified as the alleged shooter and faced the most severe charges, including murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and possession of a firearm by a convicted felon. Richardson, Cole, and Jenkins were all charged with accessory after the fact.
Following their arrests, the four suspects faced legal proceedings. Jafari Brown was held at the Beaufort County Detention Center without bond. Richardson and Cole were each granted a $100,000 surety bond. Cole was able to post bond and was released, while Richardson initially remained in custody. Jenkins also received a $100,000 surety bond and was released after posting it. In a later development, the charge against Juquetta Jenkins was dismissed on February 18, 2025. The case against the remaining suspects continues as the investigation into Green's death is ongoing. The community mourned the loss of Marquise Green, with a funeral service held on August 27, 2024, at the Word of Faith Outreach Ministry, followed by his burial at Hopes Cemetery on St. Helena Island.
