In the early morning hours of April 11, 2021, the life of 26-year-old Joshua Reed Paige was cut short in Beaufort, South Carolina. Police responded to reports of gunfire on Southside Boulevard shortly after 6 a.m. and discovered Paige's body outside a residence. He had sustained a fatal gunshot wound and was pronounced dead at the scene at 4:30 a.m.
The investigation into the death of the male victim revealed a narrative of betrayal by those he considered friends.
Earlier in the evening, Paige had been at a house party where he had a verbal altercation with Paul Washington Jr., 34, reportedly over a past relationship with a woman. Though the argument did not become physical at the time, it set in motion a tragic chain of events. According to police, two other men, Baron Brown-Lights, 28, and Isaac Lamont Smalls Jr., 33, conspired to lure Paige to his uncle's home on Southside Boulevard under the pretense of a drug deal.
Once Paige was at the location and interacting with Brown-Lights in a vehicle, an individual emerged from a wooded area and opened fire. Investigators pieced together evidence, including cellphone tracking data, which placed the suspects in the vicinity at the time of the shooting. The investigation led to the arrests of all three men approximately four months after the incident.
Paul Washington Jr. was charged with murder. His alleged accomplices, Baron Brown-Lights and Isaac Lamont Smalls Jr., faced charges of criminal conspiracy to commit murder. The arrests brought a semblance of solace to a grieving family who remembered Paige as a devoted father and an outgoing individual with a contagious laugh, who had tragically lost a brother to a brain aneurysm just 11 months prior. The men charged in his death were described by his family as his friends, with Washington being a frequent presence in Paige's life.
