Chief of Police Jerry Wayne Shelton, aged 28, tragically lost his life on March 25, 1989, in Cottageville, South Carolina. Shelton was fatally shot at approximately 1 a.m. after arresting two suspects during a traffic stop. The suspects, a male and a female, were initially stopped for speeding at 60 miles per hour in a 35 miles per hour zone.
