In the early morning hours of July 14, 2013, a trip to a Charleston, South Carolina gas station turned fatal for 22-year-old Donta Pringle. The male victim was with a group of friends at the Exxon station on Meeting and Woolfe streets when an exchange of words with a number of women escalated into a tragic outbreak of violence. Shortly after the conversation, gunfire erupted in the parking lot, striking Pringle and two other individuals.
In a desperate attempt to save him, Pringle's
friends helped him into a vehicle to rush him to the Medical University of South Carolina. However, their escape was met with another barrage of bullets at the intersection of Woolfe and Nassau streets, further endangering the occupants of the car. Despite their efforts, Pringle succumbed to his multiple gunshot wounds at the hospital. The two other victims, a male and a female, sustained non-life-threatening injuries.
The Charleston Police Department quickly launched an investigation, and witness statements, along with photographic lineups, led to the identification of three suspects. Brian Ancrum, 23, and Glendell Gladden, Jr., 29, were promptly arrested and charged with murder and attempted murder. A third suspect, 21-year-old Omary Rashard Kornickey, was apprehended later and faced the same charges.
The legal proceedings took an unexpected turn when Glendell Gladden, Jr., one of the primary suspects, died in January 2015, before his case could go to trial. Consequently, the murder charges against him were dismissed. Brian Ancrum was released on a significant bond while awaiting trial for the murder of Donta Pringle and subsequently faced additional, unrelated charges. The final disposition of the murder charges against Brian Ancrum and Omary Rashard Kornickey in connection with the death of Donta Pringle is not publicly documented.
