In the autumn of 2024, a life was abruptly cut short on a Charleston highway, leaving a community in shock and a family to grieve. Robert H. Campbell Jr., a 49-year-old Black/African American man, was driving his work van on Savannah Highway near the intersection of Bees Ferry Road on the afternoon of October 3rd. It was then that another vehicle pulled alongside, and shots rang out.
First responders arrived to a grim scene, finding Campbell inside his van, suffering from multiple
gunshot wounds. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene, his life taken in a sudden act of violence. The Charleston Police Department quickly launched an investigation into the brazen daytime shooting.
Their investigation led them to identify 26-year-old Samuel Antonio Cooper as the primary suspect. Authorities alleged that Cooper was the individual who fired into Campbell's vehicle, striking him multiple times. Adding a layer of gravity to the already tragic event, it was reported that Cooper had two children in his own vehicle at the time of the shooting.
Following the incident, Cooper fled the area, sparking a manhunt. He was later located and apprehended in Savannah, Georgia. After his capture, Cooper was extradited back to Charleston to face the consequences of his alleged actions. He was charged with murder, possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime, and two counts of unlawful conduct towards a child. His bond hearing was scheduled for October 11, 2024, as the legal process began to unfold.
