Migeal Ravenell, a 23-year-old male, was fatally shot on the evening of Wednesday, September 17, 2014, at the North Pointe Estates apartment complex on Ripplemeyer Avenue in Columbia, South Carolina. He succumbed to his injuries the following day, Thursday, September 18, 2014, at Palmetto Richland Memorial Hospital. An autopsy confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head.
Following the shooting, the Columbia Police Department swiftly identified and apprehended two
suspects. Kumasi Shamir Lewis, 21, was arrested and initially charged with attempted murder and possession of a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. A second suspect, Rolland Donall Graves Jr., was taken into custody the day Migeal Ravenell passed away. In the wake of Ravenell's death, authorities announced their intention to upgrade the charges against both men to murder.
In a turn of events, the legal proceedings against the two men did not result in murder convictions. Court records show that the murder charge against Kumasi Shamir Lewis was ultimately dropped. Rolland Donall Graves Jr. pleaded guilty to a lesser offense and was sentenced to probation for his involvement in the incident. Tragically, four years later, on September 18, 2018, the anniversary of Ravenell's death, Rolland Graves Jr. was killed in a dirt bike accident in Columbia.
