In the spring of 2025, the life of Aaron Justin “Soupy” Weibel, a 34-year-old male, was cut short in a violent encounter. On the evening of April 17th, in the parking lot of an Arby's restaurant on Garners Ferry Road in Columbia, South Carolina, an argument broke out between Weibel and a teenager. The dispute escalated into a physical fight, culminating in the teen shooting Weibel once in the upper body.
Weibel, a resident of Camden, South Carolina, succumbed to his injuries.
Following the incident, the Columbia Police Department launched an investigation, which quickly led to the arrest of a 16-year-old male. Due to his status as a minor, the suspect's name has not been publicly released. He is facing charges of murder and possession of a weapon during a violent crime and is being held at the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice. The motive for the argument that led to the fatal shooting has not been disclosed by authorities, and it remains unclear if Weibel and the teenager knew each other prior to the altercation.
Aaron Weibel was the son of Aaron Stanton Weibel of Camden and Lisa Ann Bell Weibel of Lexington. He was a father, leaving behind a daughter named Alissa LeAnn Weibel. He is also survived by his brother, Joshua Douglas Weibel, and his sister, Hannah Weibel Campbell. Funeral services were held on April 21, 2025, at Kornegay Funeral Home's Camden Chapel. His family requested that memorials be made to the Oliver Gospel Mission in Columbia.
