In the early hours of September 2, 2019, a tragic shooting cut short the life of 24-year-old Devon Roney, a male from Columbia, South Carolina. The incident occurred at Club Phoenix on Farrow Road in the Killian area of Richland County. Deputies were called to the nightclub around 2 a.m. following reports of a shooting. By the time they arrived, Roney had already been transported to Providence North East Hospital by private vehicle.
He ultimately succumbed to a gunshot wound to the torso.
Affectionately known as 'Devoo,' Devon was born in Columbia on May 18, 1995. He was educated in Richland County public schools and worked in construction. Described as unselfish and full of love, he was an aspiring rapper who was eagerly anticipating the birth of his daughter. His family remembered him as a true believer in God who lived a full and happy life.
Following the shooting, the Richland County Sheriff's Department began an investigation. At the scene, a security guard provided deputies with a handgun believed to have been used in the shooting, and a K-9 unit discovered a second handgun behind the club. The shooter, however, had fled the scene.
An arrest was made on September 9, 2019, when the Norfolk Police Department's Fugitive Task Force apprehended 24-year-old Shuron David Malone in Norfolk, Virginia. Malone was subsequently extradited back to Richland County to face charges. He was charged with murder, possession of a weapon during a violent crime, and unlawful carrying of a weapon. Malone was booked into the Alvin S. Glenn Detention Center.
