In the winter of 1993, a 30-year-old man named Robert Montgomery became an unfortunate victim of a crime spree that began with a prison escape. On January 13th of that year, Montgomery, a businessman in Columbia, South Carolina, was going about his work with his janitorial service in the downtown area. His path tragically crossed with that of two recent fugitives, Thomas Treshawn Ivey and his accomplice, Vincent Neuman, who had broken out of a jail in Clayton, Alabama, just days earlier.
Ivey and Neuman, having made their way to Columbia, which was Neuman's hometown, abducted Montgomery and forced him into his own truck. They then drove him to a rural area in Orangeburg County. In a senseless act of violence, Ivey shot Montgomery in the head and chest, ending his life. The two men then abandoned Montgomery's body, which was later discovered by hunters, and fled in his vehicle, continuing their string of criminal activities. Their crime spree, however, was short-lived.
The investigation into Montgomery's murder and the subsequent crimes of the duo led to their identification. A crucial element in the case against Ivey was the testimony of his accomplice, Vincent Neuman. Neuman provided a detailed account of the kidnapping and murder, implicating Ivey as the one who pulled the trigger.
