On March 6, 2014, a violent incident occurred at a nightclub in Columbia, South Carolina, resulting in the death of 35-year-old Black / African American male Luther Jermaine Mitchell. The shooting took place around 1:30 a.m. at Club Bananas, located on Decker Boulevard. According to investigators, the situation began with an argument in the club’s parking lot between a woman and an acquaintance of a man named CD Cash.
The dispute reportedly escalated when Cash became involved in the confrontation. Mitchell, who was a friend of the woman involved, attempted to intervene and calm the situation. Despite being unarmed and not acting aggressively, Mitchell was shot multiple times in the upper body.
Law enforcement officials from the Richland County Sheriff's Department responded to the scene and launched an investigation. Witness statements identified 30-year-old CD Cash as the individual responsible for the shooting. Following the identification, deputies located and arrested Cash on a Saturday morning shortly after the incident. He was taken into custody and initially charged with murder in connection with Mitchell's death. He was subsequently held at the Richland County jail pending legal proceedings.
Court records and subsequent reports indicate that the legal resolution of the case resulted in a conviction for a lesser charge. By 2017, CD Cash was documented as serving a prison sentence for voluntary manslaughter related to the 2014 case. While incarcerated at the Broad River Correctional Institution, Cash became the subject of a lawsuit filed against the South Carolina Department of Corrections, alleging that he was the victim of a severe assault by other inmates and that correctional officers failed to intervene. This later legal action confirmed his imprisonment status stemming from the death of Luther Jermaine Mitchell.
