The incident occurred around 2:30 p.m. in a vehicle parked in the bustling Harbison area. Jah'el was inside the car with two other children at the time. His mother had momentarily stepped away, entering a nearby store for what was later revealed to be less than three minutes, when a gun inside the vehicle
discharged, inflicting a fatal wound upon the young boy. One of the other children present in the car immediately ran into the store to alert the mother to the horrific event that had just unfolded.
The Columbia Police Department launched a thorough investigation into the devastating incident. For weeks, investigators meticulously reviewed surveillance footage, analyzed evidence from the scene, and conducted interviews with the child's family and any potential witnesses. They also worked in consultation with the Eleventh Circuit Solicitor's Office to explore all legal aspects of the case. The investigation revealed that the firearm belonged to the child's parents, who were lawful gun owners.
