In a tragic turn of events, a young life was cut short in North Charleston, South Carolina. Jamal Gathers, a 21-year-old male, was killed in a drive-by shooting on November 12, 2014. The incident happened while Gathers was a passenger in a vehicle. As another car passed by, shots were fired, fatally wounding him.
For two years, the case remained cold, with no suspects publicly identified, leaving the community and Gathers' family searching for answers.
The investigation, however, took a significant turn in 2016. A man named Desmond Lamont Miller was arrested in connection with the shooting. A crucial piece of evidence came to light when Miller was overheard on a phone call discussing his involvement in the crime.
Initially facing charges of murder, attempted murder, and possession of a weapon during a violent crime, Desmond Lamont Miller, who was 22 years old at the time of his plea, reached an agreement with prosecutors. In April 2018, he pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of manslaughter. Subsequently, Miller was sentenced to five years in prison for his role in the death of Jamal Gathers. He received credit for the more than two years he had already spent in jail awaiting the resolution of his case.
