In the early hours of a spring day in Union, South Carolina, the life of 28-year-old Christopher Lee Rhinehart was tragically cut short. Just after midnight on April 16, 2015, Rhinehart was discovered unresponsive outside his residence on Haas Street in the Monarch Mill community. He had sustained a single gunshot wound to his upper body. Emergency services rushed him to Wallace Thompson Hospital, but he was pronounced dead shortly after 1:00 a.m.
An autopsy later confirmed that the gunshot wound was the cause of his death.
The initial investigation into Rhinehart's homicide was a collaborative effort between the Union County Sheriff's Office and the South Carolina Law Enforcement Division. For years, the case remained without a public breakthrough, leaving a void in the lives of his family and community. Rhinehart, a self-employed independent contractor, was a father to four children, a son, a brother, and a friend to many in the Union area. A significant development in the cold case came in June 2021, more than six years after Rhinehart's death. The Union County Sheriff's Office announced the arrests of two men in connection with the murder. Cedrick Woods and Quenterous Jeter were taken into custody and charged with murder and attempted murder, bringing a renewed sense of hope for justice to Rhinehart's loved ones. The arrests were part of a broader, successful effort by law enforcement to resolve a number of old, unsolved cases within the county, signaling a commitment to bringing closure to families long left waiting for answers.
