A hunting trip among family members in Union County, South Carolina, ended in tragedy on the evening of Saturday, November 12, 2016. Thirty-year-old Brian Gregory Pickle of Atlanta, Georgia, was fatally shot while on a hunting excursion with his brother and father. The group was on leased land when the incident occurred.
As dusk approached, Brian's brother, Scott L. Pickle, discharged his firearm, believing he was aiming at a small animal, such as a coyote or a doe.
The fading light created a sense of urgency to take the shot. Tragically, the shot struck Brian in the head, and he was discovered deceased in the wooded area.
The Union County Sheriff's Office was notified, and an investigation into the shooting was initiated. The coroner confirmed that the cause of death was a gunshot wound to the head. Authorities at the time described the event as a heartbreaking accident. The South Carolina Department of Natural Resources also conducted an investigation into the incident. No charges were immediately filed in connection with the fatal shooting.
