In the summer of 2015, a domestic disturbance in Turbeville, South Carolina, tragically ended the life of 38-year-old Jeremiah Jay James Parshley. On the night of Saturday, July 18, 2015, Clarendon County Sheriff's deputies were dispatched to a residence on Sandhill Road following a report of a shooting. Upon their arrival, they discovered the body of Jeremiah Parshley in the front yard of his home.
Investigations into the incident revealed a preceding domestic dispute between Parshley
and his wife. Following the argument, as Parshley was gathering his belongings to leave the residence, he was shot multiple times. The male shooter was identified as his 16-year-old son. The teenager allegedly retrieved a handgun and shot his father four times in the back.
The son, Dustin Parshley, was taken into custody and subsequently charged with murder. He admitted to the shooting and was reportedly remorseful. Although he was a minor, he was slated to be tried as an adult, and a bond was set at $20,000. There had been no prior reports of domestic violence at the home, though deputies had previously responded to a burglary call at the residence.
In July of 2017, the legal proceedings came to a conclusion. Dustin James Parshley, the son of the deceased, pleaded guilty to a lesser charge of involuntary manslaughter. He received a sentence under the Youth Offender Act for a term not to exceed five years. This sentence was suspended, and he was instead given 18 months of probation for his role in the death of his father, Jeremiah Parshley.
