In the late summer of 2025, the community of Timmonsville, South Carolina, was shaken by the violent and untimely death of one of its own. Calvin Danielle Sowells Sr., a 37-year-old Black/African American man, was fatally shot on Tuesday, August 26, 2025. Following the shooting, Sowells tragically staggered into the Hot Spot convenience store located on Highway 76 in a desperate search for help.
Despite the immediate response from first responders who rushed him for medical treatment, he sadly did not survive his injuries.
Remembered for his big heart and a radiant smile that could illuminate any room, Calvin Sowells was a man deeply rooted in his community. Born in Florence County on December 7, 1987, he was a 2007 graduate of Timmonsville High School. Known for his dedication and entrepreneurial spirit, he was the co-owner of JPW Motors. A devoted father, he leaves behind two children and was excitedly awaiting the birth of his third child. His death left a profound void in the lives of his family and friends who cherished him for the warmth and joy he brought into their lives.
The investigation into Sowells' death quickly progressed, with law enforcement identifying two men as persons of interest and warning the public that they were considered armed and dangerous. This led to the arrest of Ja'Tayvion De'Shon Maurice Dickey, who was subsequently charged with murder and possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime. A second suspect, 42-year-old Marcino Jarvaris Brown, later turned himself in to authorities. He was also charged with the murder of Calvin Sowells, in addition to robbery and criminal conspiracy. With both suspects in custody at the Florence County Detention Center, the case has moved toward the judicial process, leaving a community to mourn the loss of a beloved member.
