In the late summer of 2016, a violent disturbance erupted at the Norris Ridge Apartments in Spartanburg, South Carolina, claiming the life of a young man and injuring several others. On August 17, Jamel Lydell Thompson, a 27-year-old Black / African American male, became the fatal casualty of a chaotic shooting that shook the local community. The incident unfolded during the day, drawing law enforcement to the scene where gunshots had rung out, leaving multiple victims in their wake.
Thompson sustained a severe gunshot wound to his leg during the altercation. Despite the efforts to save him, he was transported to a local hospital where he succumbed to his injuries. The coroner later determined that the cause of death was internal hemorrhage secondary to the gunshot wound, ruling the death a homicide. The violence of that day did not stop with Thompson; three other individuals also suffered injuries during the shooting, creating a complex crime scene for investigators to unravel.
In the immediate aftermath, a gold Cadillac was identified as a key vehicle fleeing the scene of the crime. This vehicle arrived at Spartanburg Medical Center shortly after the shooting, carrying two other gunshot victims who were seeking treatment. One of these individuals had been struck in the upper chest, while another suffered wounds to the hands and abdomen. The arrival of the vehicle and the injured men at the hospital provided a crucial lead for the Spartanburg Police Department as they pieced together the events that led to Thompson's death.
A thorough investigation by local authorities led to the identification and subsequent arrest of two suspects connected to the deadly incident. Marcus Terail Watkins, who was identified as the driver of the gold Cadillac, and Damaris Shasmond Hill were taken into custody. Both men faced serious legal repercussions for their alleged roles in the violence. They were charged with Breach of Peace of a High and Aggravated Nature. Following their arrests, both Watkins and Hill appeared before a judge and were denied bond, ensuring they remained in detention as the legal proceedings moved forward. The community later gathered to mourn the loss of Jamel Thompson, with funeral services held on August 25, 2016, at the United House of Prayer for All People.
